Dirt Cheap Motels

  • The Motels are a New Wave music band from the Los Angeles area best known for "Only the Lonely" and "Suddenly Last Summer", both of which peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982 and 1983, respectively. Their song "Total Control" reached #4 on the Australian charts in 1980.

  • (motel) a motor hotel

The old timers at the Maya Meetings stay
at the Rodeway Inn, within walking distance
from the UT Austin campus. My darlin'
companion and I came to the party late, so
we've never managed to snag a room at the
Rodeway -- they're usually all booked up.

I found the Austin Motel online when I was
looking for an alternate place to crash during
the meetings, and I immediately fell in love
with the way the website design appropriated
this crazy phallic neon sign as an ever present
icon that was repeated many times over in
the global navigation (although I think they
may have redesigned the site not too long ago
-- but I'm posting by Sidekick and I'm too lazy
to check). It's a perfect example of design
so bad that it's good.

The motel continues the bad design theme --
a 1930s motor inn, it's been redone in true Austin-style
with full size photographic wall friezes
and funky random themes in which pictorial
representations of tropical plants figure
prominently.

It's also cheap. Half the price of the Rodeway.
Which pretty much seals the deal.

So it became our hovel of choice when we were
in Austin -- or mine, at least. My sweetie found
my taste for this kind of funkiness questionable
at best, but the rate sold him too, so he pretty
much let me do what I wanted to do. (Smart man.)

Only it seems we weren't the only ones to
fall for the Austin Motel: the last couple of
times I've tried for a room around this time of
year it's been booked up solid with
SXSWesterners, and this last time they
referred us to the Hotel San Jose right
across the alleyway.

The Hotel San Jose is another mid-century
modern do-over -- each room is its own little
bungalow, appointed in a way that would make
Dwell Magazine terribly proud. The website
advertises that each room has its own Eames
chair (no foolin') and the door handles look a
whole lot like the ones Wittgenstein designed
for his sister's place.

My sweetie's complaining that the hemp soap
smells like dirt, and the lime green flip-flops
placed for my convenience in the bathroom could
be mine if I didn't mind shilling out 20 bucks for
them.

I suspect this place is a whole lot hipper than I
know how to be. And it costs just about as much
as the Rodeway. So we're back to square one.

But the robes are awfully comfy, anyway.

our dirt cheap motel in athens right near the bars, cafes and shops that Athens is full of. Athens was a welcome surprise from Bangkok. It was much more mellow and calm. Traffic seemed bearable, (ie. I'd give it a whirl if it weren't such a pedestrian friendly city). Apparently Athens is plagued by smog but the weather was great when we were there so it kept the air cleaner than it normally is there.

Dark Side of the Doritos

Dark Side of the Doritos

Made from cut bags of the following 8 Doritos flavors:

Late Night Cheeseburger
Pizza Supreme
Nacho Cheese
Throwback Taco (Limited Edition)
Toasted Corn
Salsa Verde
Blazin' Buffalo & Ranch
Spicy Sweet Chili

There are a lot of Doritos flavors out there, perhaps too many. There is literally a flavor / package for each color used in the Dark Side of the Moon album cover design. So I thought it would be a fun project to try and make the album cover out of cut pieces from those bags.

If you'd like to make this yourself, here's what you'll need:

-At least 8 bags of Doritos, 8 different flavors.
(View the notes on the image above to see which bags / flavors I used for each section.)
-Exacto knife and scissors
-Super glue (to help keep the spectrum of colors together)
-Storage bags (to store the Doritos after you take them out of the original bags)

Cut off the sections from the bags that have the least amount of type / images.
Find a good chip.
Arrange pieces together until it resembles the Dark Side of the Moon cover.
Take a photo and show it to your friends.
Have fun.

These Doritos are called "Sweet Chile Heat" in Canada, where we first encountered them while on vacation last year. They are awesome and I'm soooo glad I can get them here in the US now! I snagged the last 2 bags at the grocery store.

A Serendepitous Find: Landmarks of Manila

A Serendepitous Find: Landmarks of Manila

de la Torre, V. R. 1981. Landmarks of Manila, 1571-1930. Filipinas Foundation: Manila.

Over the weekend, I was rooting around in one of the secondhand bookshops in San Diego and found this prize. It was my birthday present to me!

This book is a documentary of Manila buildings that -- for one reason or another -- are no longer standing, have been replaced or renovated beyond recognition. It is a testament to the beauty of Manila throughout its history right up to before WW II. World War II changed all of that. Manila was the most devastated city in the Far East and second only to Warsaw among the cities overrun by the war. To my mind, it has not yet recovered. Pictures of Subjects include:

Government Buildings : Malacanang Palace, Tutuban Station, Manila Post Office, Philippine Legislative Building, Philippine National Museum, Philippine National Library*, Manila City Hall.

Private Buildings: Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), Bank of Monte de Piedad, the Tabacalera, Elizalde & Co., San Miguel Corp., La Tondena, Inc., Meralco, Insular Life, The Manila Hotel, Gonzalo Puyat & Sons, Ayala Corp.

* My granduncle, Director Luis A. Montilla, was responsible for the National Library's new building inagurated in 1961. He resigned as director of the National Library just prior to its inaguration to become the director of the Rizal Centennial Celebration. The inauguration of the Library's new building in 1961 was scheduled by Dir. Montilla to coincide with Rizal's Centennial Celebration.

** My grandmother Salvacion (and sister of Dir. Luis Montilla) grew up and was a teacher at Sta. Isabel before her marriage to my grandfather in 1927. Their sister, Adela Montilla Manibog, married prominent Ilocano Attorney and Columbian Gonzalo Manibog. Their son, Atty. Monty Manibog, became Mayor of Monterrry Park and was the first Asian American to become mayor of a U.S metropolitan city.

*** My granduncle, Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez, was a famous leprologist and director of San Lazaro Hospital during the 1940s thru the 1960s. Tala Leprosarium was subsequently renamed the Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital in his honor. His wife is famous Philippine feminist Nieves Hidalgo whose sister, Pilar Hidalgo, was president of Centro Escolar University and was married to Gen. Vicente Lim. Former Philippine Central Bank Governor Jaime Laya is married to Alicia Sandoval, the niece of Nieves Rodriguez and Pilar Lim and daughter of their youngest sister, Concepcion Hidalgo Sandoval.

My father, Porfirio J. Callo, graduated from UST in 1957 and was trained by Dr. Rodriguez. He was a physician at San Lazaro from 1957 until 1969 when he left for the United States.

**** Imelda Romualdez Marcos's mother was reared by the nuns of the Asilo de Vicente de Paul.

***** Divisoria was owned by Teodoro Yangco of San Antonio, Zambales. Yangco is considered the Philippines's first philantropist. My great grandaunts, Amelia del Fierro Corpus and Soledad Verzosa (she owned Try-V-Tran Transport which subsequently became Victory Liner) were the majority heirs of Teodoro Yangco. Note*** This information was changed from Yanco to Yangco, a correction pointed out by Mr. Binondo. Thank you so much for pointing that out, Mr. Binondo! I truly appreciate it!! =)
